Working in the RV

My desk in the Arv

It is not easy creating a space to work in an RV. I am the type of person that needs a physical anchor for my work. I don’t mind working at a coffee shop or a library, at a kitchen table, or even sitting in the recliner and doing some work. But I prefer a desk, a place that is uniquely my own workspace.

Living in an RV right now means that space is limited. We had to make decisions about what furniture would be included and excluded. When we first moved in, we had a kitchen table for our meals and no dedicated desk. We soon realized that we mostly ate sitting in the recliners and rarely at the table. So, out went the table, and in came a very small desk for my workspace. It is big enough for most of my work and yet still fits into the scheme of the RV. I have windows for light and fresh air as well as for distracted contemplation (there is no one next to us right now, and the window looks out on woods and fields).

It may not be optimal, but it makes my working in the RV more productive for this season of life.

The Family Business

October 1, 2019 By John Deisher

“I have rightfully no other business each day but to do God’s work as a servant, constantly regarding His pleasure. May I have grace to live above every human motive, simply with God and to God.”

Sometimes we get confused.

We think we are the master and God is the servant.

I don’t know that we mean to think that, but that is the way it works out. We pray and ask God to meet our needs. We do it with the best of intentions because we know that he loves us and has good things for us.

Then we arise from our prayers and go live our life. OUR life.

I am the master. God is the servant.

So what if instead we begin the day by saying this prayer, “Thy will be done, Father. What does it look like through my life today?”

And then listen to the Father and go do it; a life lived “simply with God and to God”.

Just working in the family business.

Labor and Reward

“Our labor here is brief, but the reward is eternal. Do not be disturbed by the clamor of the world, which passes like a shadow. Do not let false delights of a deceptive world deceive you.”

— St. Clare of Assisi

What legacy will we leave? What will be the result of all that we have done in our life?

In our youth we never ask that question. In our advancing years we may sometimes wonder if we should have.

Our labor is brief. What price we paid, what we endured, what we focused on, all are brief in the scope of eternity. It is a fleeting shadow, a false delight.

But the fruit of that labor is eternal. Good fruit. Bad fruit. No fruit. It is eternal.

How sad to come to the end of life and realize that it was all chasing vanities.

Who cares what is in your wallet. The bigger question is what is in your eternity?
